The Plot

At some point, around the year 2000, a comet hits earth and causes global catastrophes (sounds alot like Thundarr the Barbarian, eh?) Later, in 2033, the only water left is under the control of The Department of Water and Power, an evil corporation. Tank Girl lives with a bunch of friends who are soon all killed and TG is taken prisoner of W&P. She later meets up with Jet Girl and a bunch of mutant kangaroos and tries to overthrow W&P.

Other facts as I know them

The movie started filming on 21 June, 1994, in White Sands, New Mexico. The desert scenes were filmed there. Ten days later they moved to an abandoned mine near Tuscon, Arizona to film the rest of the movie. Filming finished in the middle of October. Post-production was scheduled for the following six weeks. Test showings occured as eary as 13 December, possibly earlier (The movie was not complete for the test showings. As is normal for these things there were blank spaces in the film where you were supposed to imagine a hideously expensive special effect). The movie was released on 31 March, 1995 in the US, 16 June in the UK, and randfom other times in other places.

The original suggested budget was $15 million, but that was soon raised to $25 million to accomidate the large amount of action.

There was a huge open audition for Tank Girl held in New York, London, and Los Angeles. They ended up using it only for a publicity stunt (parts were shown on MTV) 'cos they didn't like anyone. Apparently all the actresses were fluffy haired "My agent sent me here, what's it about?" people. All the punksters were unable to prove they could act in the 30 seconds alloted . So they cast a semi-unknown actress.

Emily Lloyd was cast to be Tank Girl, but she flaked out. Apparently there were some differences of opinion, not the least of which was she would not shave her head. You'd think that would be one of the first questions they'd have asked at the audition.

The replacement was Lori Petty. The general consensis is that she did a decent job, given what she had to work with.

Similarly, Bjork was originally cast as Sub girl, but she changed her mind at the last minute. In her stead is Ann Cusack. Apparently Sub girl doesn't have a big role in the movie (not surprising since it is a world without water). Well, she never had a large role in the comic, anyway. Her only big adventures were dreaming about Booga as a messia and discussing the Smiths. In leu of acting Bjork did a song for the movie.

A fair amount of the film was cut out. Apparently the studio had apprehensions about such controversial things as drug use and 'roo shagging. It's not like worse stuff has ever been done. Just about every film today has racism, explotation, rape, and/or murder. Are these controversial? Nooooooo. These are very popular things that everyday people do all the time. So, stuff like TG in bed with Booga was cut, as was most of the stuff with Sub Girl. I've compiled a whole big list of what was cut, with help from the director Rachel Talalay.

Anyway, despite the movie's R rating, they could only say "fuck" twice, so Jamie Hewlett came up with a huge list of foul language, much of it much worse, than "fuck", but obscure or archaic enuf to get past sensors. Someone somewhere listed those words. Here's a copy.

Jamie Hewlett, is supposed to be happy with the accuracy of the movie. Go figure. Deadline decied to go bi-monthly :(, claiming that they're all too busy to get it out regularly to have monthly issues. Instead they put out double sized issues. Instead of going back to full-sized issues when the movie came out, they went brok and gave up the whole thing.

Have Hewlett and Martin and Deadline sold out? Don't guess, get the facts.

Director Rachel Talalay is on the net, and did occasionally even read a.f.t-g, but I haven't seen her post, probably because she got sick of masses of email long ago. So, she currently does not give out her address.

Sources

According to Deadline: "Yes, Bjork is Sub Girl; yes Iggy Pop's in the film; also Malcolm McDowell."
Which is odd, because The Times and evryone else was very sure that Anne Cusack had the part of Sub Girl. (see above)

London's Time Out Magazine confirms that Ice-T is in the film, and plays a kangaroo. According to a half page article in 24 Seven Ice-T plays a character name T-Sain. The latest Deadline, however, names him T-Saint. Well, Deadline is right and 24 Seven Hasn't clue.

An article someone posted to a.f.t-g claiming to be a press release stated that some other roles are as follows: Naomi Watts as Jet Girl. Reg E. Cathey, Scott Coffey, and Jeff Kober as kangaroos. Of course the only English person in the film, Malcolm McDowell, is the bad guy. Don Harvey is another bad guy. It looks like someone named Brian Wimmer is supposed to be Tank Girl's boyfriend, but he plays a human. This is contradicted by the article in The Face where Jeff Kober plays Booga and is Tank's Boyfriend. The answer is, of course, they are both Tank Girl's boyfriend, just in different parts of the movie. Anyway, this article also states the movie to be by United Artists, but I do believe it is by MGM. The answer is that MGM bought out UA in the corporate 80's. Now it's MGM-UA. So much for American antitrust laws. I should have known that, but I can't afford to see new films in London :(.

The Weekend section of The Times (London) on 8 October, had a 3 page article, which refuted Deadline and claimed that Anne Cusack had the part of Sub Girl (see above). Also, some claim that the movie is in White Sands, NM. Tho, this article claims it to be in Arizona. This may be due to the fact that most English people don't know the difference and even think that Albany is a borough of New York City. (Actually it was filmed in both places, see above). This also says that Tank's boy is half-man half kangaroo, and not some bloke named Richard (actually they are both right, since Richard is her boy at the start of the film).

Someone posted an except from an interview with Jamie Hewlett on radio 1 FM's "evening session" programme (6 September, 1994). This confirmed some cast and listed some music which will be in the film.

An issue of The Face had a 4 page article on Tank Girl with pictures and everything. It states that Jeff Kober plays Booga and is Tank Girl's shagpuppet.
